Sopapias When it Rains

Today Greg and the boys went in to Casa Esperanza (where the older girls live) while I worked.  It was cloudy when they left, but started to rain shortly after that.  I felt concerned that they didn't have their rain gear.

"He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; He provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy."  (Acts 14:17)  This is the rainy season in Chile, and while we have been praying that it will be a "dry" June/July rain is a good thing.

When Greg and the boys arrived late morning they were welcomed like royalty.  Patti brought out a plate full of cookies and chips, and the boys devoured them as if they hadn't eaten for days.  Since it was raining and most of the girls were away at school, a couple of the girls that were there thought the boys should play on the Wii.  That didn't require much arm twisting!

Greg helped Willie put some drywall up today in the guest house.  Willie is mostly building the guest house by himself, and Greg wondered how he did some of this heavy lifting type work on his own.  Willie's amazing.  A large truck came with some heavy furniture items.  A missionary family that has been living in Chile is now moving home.  They sold some of their things at a garage sale, but had some remaining items that they donated to Casa Esperanza.  Greg and Noah helped unload furniture and bring it inside.

Lunch was incredible.  Patti makes lunch for the girls each day.  Lunch is the main meal of the day, and often runs from 1:00-2:30 p.m. (or even 3:00 p.m.).  The girls make their own breakfast in the morning and their own supper at night with food that is in the pantry.  But lunch is big, and good!  Today Patti made chicken, rice and beats.  Even Griffy ate the chicken and rice.

Whenever it's raining Patti makes sopapias.  Whew, REAL sopapias!!  You can see Griffy is eating one of them in this picture.  Willie was going to pick his son, Jacob, up at school so Greg went with him.  When they got back they played with Jacob for awhile, but then began the journey home.  Since it was raining Willie was really kind and gave them a ride to the metro.  Here in Chile they stuff lots of people in cars, and the cars are all quite small.  Check this out...five kids in the back seat.

The guys got back to the apartment around 5:30 p.m.  Here I had been worried about them in the rain, and they loved walking home in.  Getting their jackets to dry out is another matter...

  2. We hope Greg learns how to make sopapias too! If you can believe it, they make sopapias out of pumpkin here. But not the kind of pumpkin we have - the outside is kind of white and the inside is a little less orange.
